1 out of 5 stars Dangerously inaccurate   November 3, 2008

We bought this product assuming that a digital thermometer by a well known brand would be extremely accurate. Our old bath thermometer that changed colour according to the temperature was becoming harder to read, but we'd always found it really easy to use - it had a +, - or a tick. We were surprised to find that when the new Avent thermometer was showing 37 deg C the old one would show a + (ie. too hot). We assumed that the old one just wasn't very accurate, and that we must have been making the bath too cold. When our boys (at the time one was 4 months, the other 2 years) complained that the water was too hot. It felt quite warm but we assumed it was because we'd been used to making the bath too cold. In the meantime we were quite annoyed that the Avent themometer had a tendency to flip upside down in the bath - so instead of glancing at it's small screen to read the temperature, we would have to periodically turn it over so the screen faced up, wait for it to register the bath temperature (because initially it was showing room temperature when upside down - the sensor was out of the water). Stupid design. Recently we got a newer themometer the was easier to read (Tigex Dolphin made with Rapeseed oil) and decided to compare the readings. We were shocked and concerned to discover that the Avent thermometer was giving false readings, approximately 3 deg C higher than the actual bath temperature. So when we had been making it 37 deg C, the water was actually just over 40 deg C - far too hot for a young baby. We feel terrible that we had trusted this awful product - even though the water felt quite warm we trusted that a digital thermometer would be a more accurate gauge of temperature than our perception of water temperature. To make matters worse - when I complained to Avent, they simply replied saying I should try returning it for an exchange or refund. They did not apologise, they did not request to investigate the fault, they didn't ask for the thermometer back to test and examine it. This I find utterly shocking. A company that makes what is essentially a baby safety product should take responsibility. OK, nobody can guarantee that a product isn't going to go wrong - but in a situation like this I'm just appalled by their lack of interest.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect baby thermometer   October 31, 2008
We have three thermometers at home for our little boy, a Grobag egg, one built into the baby monitor and this Philips one. But it is this Philips one I like the best.

The Philips thermometer consists of a good, no-nonsense easily read LCD display showing the temperature. The display is covered with a little plastic circle - which looks like it could scratch - but ours hasn't despite some real rough handling. This is mounted into a good tough rubber flower -- not too soft and not too hard. We're happy to let our little boy chew away on it now that he's teeting. In fact he quite likes playing with it. It gets dropped and thrown but is still going strong and has not discoloured or anything.

It seems fully waterproof to test the bath temperature (and is handily marked 37C to remind you want the temperature should be). It is also free-standing for use as a room thermometer. We also threw it in our bags for holiday without worry and used it to check the pool temperature.

It seems pretty acurate, I trust it, and it changes its reading quickly.

On of the benefits of this one is that it is battery powered, so no having to move leads around like the Grobag one. It goes from room to room with us when necessary. Not sure how long the battery lasts, but some friends have had theirs for four years without having to replace it.

We've now had ours for a year, and all in all, I'd highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great item   June 1, 2008

This is a great item, I have used both in the bath and nursery. Very accurate and fast to give the temp. After two years I'm just about to replace mine as bath products have caused a few black marks around the face but it only effects the look. A great a good looking product.

    2 out of 5 stars why did I buy this ?   May 30, 2008

In the lead-up to my first child, I rushed out and bought this thinking it would be incredibly useful : I would know how warm the baby's room is AND whether the bath water is too hot or too cold. I hate to say it, but this is all common sense, and this gadget has sat on the shelf gathering dust for 2 years. I will soon have my second child, and I don't think we'll even look at this cute little daisy. AGAIN.

4 out of 5 stars Good but double check the temperature with your hand!   January 28, 2008

Good design, but needs to be placed in bath rather than chucked as it can roll over. Temp reading can take a few seconds and can jump through a couple of readings, so always swish water and double check bath yourself to make sure reading is not too low and to eliminate hot spots.
