Great little magic set November 25, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Please note that this review is by an adult who has had a sneaky play and not yet road tested with my child (magic show now repacked and wrapped up for Christmas!)
My daughter has asked for a magic set for Christmas and insisted it came with a hat and bunny! There are several different sets out there, but as I have bought Marvin's magic tricks in the past and always been happy with the quality, I chose this one. Delighted that I did. I have since had a peek in a few cheaper boxes in the stores and none have looked as well made or with as many tricks as this set.
Of course, I had to open it all up and check it out before it got wrapped away.. The hat is sturdy, not too big, not too small. A bit "plasticky" but fairly robust. The rabbit is a glove puppet, a little cheap looking but I suspect that is only in the eyes of a fussy adult - definitely has a cute face! The tricks contained are fun and varied. I have bought a lot of children's magic equipment over the last couple of years and from what I could tell, this kit is quite comprehensive with plenty to occupy a child. For someone who is 8yrs+, they could probably sit quietly and work them out for themselves, 5+ yrs will need a fair bit of adult help, still achievable and could put on a convincing little show. (The wand is a little basic - I bought Marvin's magic wand to go with this - larger with a few extras and only a few pounds too).
While I do not believe every toy should be educational, the learning value in playing with magic tricks is undeniable - reading, repetition pracitising, developing concentration skills, performing, confidence building, developing speaking skills, the list goes on.
This should make any child 5-10yrs very happy. Being a little different from usual toys, the idea of working out a sequence of tricks, performing to family and friends etc is brilliant.
