Useless junk! October 18, 2008 Well, the unit I received matches the picture, but judging from my experience it can't be the same as received by other reviewers.
Cut to the chase - it simply doesn't work. IDE drives that work when hooked up internally are not recognised at all when placed inside this unit. Tried three drives, none works inside this thing. 1 star is a bit generous for a totally non-functional device, but negative marks aren't possible.
The insertion of a drive inside this unit is a dreadful fiddly hassle, due to stupidly cramped design. The unit has to be disassembled, the drive connected and screwed into the tray, and then re-assembled. This cannot be achieved without using some physical persuasion to get the cables etc. to fit the outer casing. This may explain the subsequent failure of the unit, as the whole contraption is fragile and flimsy, and it would be very easy to dislodge/bend/break some part of the enclosure's electronics and 'brick' the thing.
Amazon, you should be ashamed to stock garbage like this. Perhaps better stick to what you do best, books and music. I'll be going elsewhere for something that doesn't appear to be a cheap knock-off of a poor original.
Excellent enclosure. October 13, 2008 This is an excellent product. It is exactly as described, and I can find no fault with it! I bought it in order to house a new Hitacchi 500 gb drive, and it does the job perfectly.

This may sound like an ad for Amazon, but I can assure that it is not intended to be, but credit where credit is due.
I ordered this item on May bank holiday monday 2008. I used the free dispatch method as I was not desparate for it at the time. It arrived 2 days later on the wednesday. All intact. Brilliant. I was impressed.
As to the item itself. I originally had difficulty getting the disc to be recognized but that was due to the MBR on the disc being corrupted. I erased the MBR and was then able to do a backup from a disc image and the disc was then visible.
I agree that space is a bit tight, but nevertheless it works and does the job. The "Manual" on the CD is a bit confusing as it infers that there ia switch on the front panel that is supposed to be set to select between sata and ide. but it does not exist. The pcb has silk screening indicating a space for a switch but one is not fitted. However, as far as I can make out, there is no switch indicated on the picture. So if I ever get a sata drive and it does not work I shall be somewhat annoyed.
Watch this space
Simple and effective April 4, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had a spare 40Gb IDE drive that I wanted to use to backup data from my PC and then move to a separate location away from my PC. This enclosure fits the bill beautifully. It's easy to set up, very easy and quick to use. Well recommended
Superb enclosure March 4, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Very simple and effective. Robust as the Western Digital I currently have.
I am buying two more.
