Mixed bag November 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First, the drive looks great. Like a small screaming black obelisk; very stylish. I wish I could turn the cool blue glow down or off though, but that's pretty minor. Although it's shiny, it hasn't picked up any fingerprints from my normally sweaty fingertips yet.
Installation on my iMac was trivially easy. Plug and play.
To other reviewers:
1. Power cord - it actually comes with two power cords, one UK and one European. Are you sure you didn't just throw the UK one out by mistake? It happens surprisingly often. I've done it myself before.
2. Cache. As the other reviewer notes, it doesn't make much difference. But this is just USB 2.0 anyway; if you want speed, why get a USB 2.0 drive? Do yourself a favour and get the Firewire version (which costs about 30 more).
I'm not that bothered about speed - I just wanted a quiet machine to use as a backup in the background to host my Time Machine. And there's the main problem. The spec says "fanless, near silent operation", But it's not. As far as I can tell it has got a fan, and it's nowhere near silent. OK, it's not the noisiest hard drive I've heard, but it's appreciably noisier than the hard drive in my iMac, for example.
It's bad enough that I've contact LaCie. Perhaps I'm just unlucky and mine is faulty.
superb. 16mb cache does EXACTLY the same job as 32mb November 8, 2008 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
superb silent enclosure.
incidentally, a 32mb cache is no faster than a 16mb cache on a 1tb drive. makes no difference whatsoever.
its just a marketing gimmick to attract people who think more cache is better. It is, but theres a limit, and anything over 16mb on 1tb is completely pointless, you will not see a difference.
quick delivery.. shame about all the lies. October 31, 2008 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
Item came within a day standard delivery was very impresspred with that. The first thing I noticed is that on the box there was a sticker saying 1TB, underneath this sticker though could clearly be seen 700GB, which was all the device had of storage space. The 32MB Cache is not what came, instead I recieved a 16MB Cache, I have no idea if Its only me being affected by these things. The power adapter that came wasn't actually suitable for uk mains so chances are you would have to buy an adapter for it. Shame on amazon for the mix up!
Not 32Mb cache as stated in advert. October 31, 2008 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
Nice drive but only comes with 16Mb cache and not 32mb as stated in the Amazon description, I know this because I returned the original drive and was sent a replacement, both had 16Mb cache (as printed on side of box). My main reason for purchasing this drive was the advertised 32Mb cache (a bigger cache increases the file transfer rate quite dramatically), so I will be returning this second drive for a full refund.
Fantastic storage capacity August 15, 2008 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
I am not an expert computer user but enjoy editing home videos prior to burning onto a DVD. This unit provides a good level of storage capacity for films (and anything else) and I found that it was really easy to set up and use. The only downside is that, because the unit comes with a very shiny finish, every fingerprint shows up.
