Buy a phone with a built in answering machine instead November 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is quite a simple answering machine, but it suffers from being slow and occasionally it seems to get stuck and keep beeping even when you have listened to the new messages. On a cordless phone, you get terrible screeching speaker feedback over the top of your conversation if you approach within 3 metres of it. If you answer a call after the answering machine starts up, you have to wait for the recorded message to speak over the top of you before you can be heard by the caller. Worst of all on cordless phones, if the answering machine comes on, your private conversation is broadcast live by the answering machine's speaker and recorded for later playback. I suppose this machine would be alright for a corded telephone, but it does mean extra trailing wires and another plug socket are taken up, so perhaps it would be better to invest in a new phone with a built in answering machine, or just make do with a line service, like BT's own 1571. This machine is really a bit of a dinosaur.
Dies too regularly May 18, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Easy to use and performs well - trouble is it dies too readily. We are (or were) on our 2nd BT Response 75: our first just saw out the warranty, dying after 13 months. We had liked it so much we bought another, but this has now also died, albeit after 2 years. Is it me? Do I expect too much? For your info, 'we' are a UK couple in our 60s, so no kids at home, and only normal domestic useage. I agree with Kotovasii re PP3 batteries - they are very expensive and (possibly) unnecessary - but their cost pales into the proverbial insignificance when compared to repeated renewals of the entire unit.
Terrible design! November 12, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This answering machine is terrible - it would be much better to use a tape recorder really. The box requires 9V battery to maintain itself, and if you have a power cut not only will you lose all of your settings but also all of your messages. The battery in it lasts only a few hours and if say you have a power cut for 12 hours you lost all of your messages. Have BT ever heard of FLASH memory???
The operation of this box is not intuitive and unless you know what you are pressing you may erase a message by mistake. If I can operate complicated robotic equipment in the lab without reading a manual, I expect to be able to cope with an answering machine....
Well built, reliable, and does the job. September 25, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
We have had one of these at work for a couple of years, and it's still going strong, which says something. Now we've bought a second one for another phone line. This machine is designed by BT and it shows. A clearly visible red button to delete calls, easy to use generally and I think a nice smooth design. It feels well built. My one complaint is that the standby battery (not supplied) is one of those odd things we used to call a PP9 I think. Why not standard AA batteries? Otherwise recommended and good value.
POSTSCRIPT:
Shortly after writing the above, one of our Response 75 answerphones died. Now another Response 75 has died (within about a year). I spoke too soon about reliability; clearly there is a problem here which BT ought to sort out. Very disappointed. I would only give one or two stars now.
What a pain!!!! August 28, 2007 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
DO NOT BUY this answer machine if you have more than one line in the house. We are a small business and have three lines, BT fitted a DACS II system to achive this. If you have one of these (large box next to the main telephon socket) the answerphone will not work BEWARE!!! BT themselves were very unhelpfull when we tried to get a straight answer from them so its back to the old PHILIPS answer machine for us.
