My first non-Lexmark printer, and very pleased so far November 29, 2008 After being a Lexmark printer user for 10 years, I decided to try this Cannon MP610 - mainly because of the useful reviews here on Amazon. I thought I'd add a few comments of my own.
I'm very pleased with the build quality and finish of the printer, and it has a number of features that I like. For example, paper can be added to an upright feed at the back of the machine, and to a tray at the bottom of the machine. I print lots of address labels, so I can keep normal paper in the upright feed, and my address labels in the bottom tray.
The ability to print on printable surface discs is very useful, and there's software supplied to allow you to create your own designs. Discs are easily inserted using a supplied tray, and this is done one at a time.
Installation on Windows XP was straightforward (about 5-10 minutes), and there's a good range of utility software included to manage printing, scanning etc. Only slight complaint was that installation plonked 4 or 5 new icons on the desktop, but I found the 'Cannon Solution Menu' icon was the only one I really needed to keep on the desktop - because I'm fussy and don't like a cluttered desktop !!.
The flip-up colour LCD control screen on the printer is very good quality, and of a large enough size and clarity to be useable.
I like the fact that there's a door on the front (where the prints come out) that can be closed, as this will help keep the dust etc out when not in use. The flip up screen can also be closed flush to the body.
Printing at standard quality is very quick, and the printer runs quietly. It took just under 6 seconds from pressing the 'print test page' button to completion of a full A4 page of text (the Windows XP print test page).
As noted in other reviews, there's no USB lead with the printer for whatever reason (disappointing), and it requires a 'USB A to B' type lead.
So far, I'm very happy with the purchase.
the price of inks November 6, 2008 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
i have had this printer (bought from amazon) for 6 months. i had to give up a lovely epson that had never let me down as it wouldn't work with my new Mac. the very good reviews the nice customers at amazon gave this machine prompted me into its purchase above a new epson 680.
the scanner is great. it has beginner and advanced user status and is very easy to format. the prints are super fast although the colour management is not so compatible with the new iMac's monitor, eg, the prints don,t look like they do on the screen. but then i take my work up to a local print shop and they use PC's and the colour saturation is always an issue. i have to drop the saturation by 25% to print out what i see in front of me. altering the colour management system so that the printer has control rather than the computer seems to work best. the canon copies even faster than it prints with no nasty shaded bits and super white crisp edges. the scroll wheel is a stylish though somewhat pointless addition to the interface, and the machine is very heavy, bulky and on occasions noisy.
however, the overall quality of the prints, the fantastic scanner and the speedy copier system make this a great purchase, BUT and its a big BUT, only if you are prepared to pay top whack for your printer cartridges.
if you print a lot, which i do, you may make the mistake of attempting to fit a CIS system. after the macbeth like scene of ink spattered work surfaces and stained hands, followed by near hysteria as to why was i so stupid that i couldn;t fit the simplest system in the world, i gave up. later discovering from a website that canon have designed the 610 to twart such an action. canon have also got into the cartridge chip and made it tell you that its empty when its not, thereby forcing you to purchase another cartridge. so if say the magenta cartridge is reading empty, the printer will not work. you can,t do anything, no scanning, no black and white printing, nothing. turning the printer off and then on again actually uses more ink...eek the price of endless replacment landfilling cartridges has made me view this very un eco machine with suspicion.
perhaps its becaue i'm working off a Mac that means i can,t tell the printer that the catridges are full, but i searched the web and its seems a vry common problem. i even bought a chip re setter this morning and tried to re set the chips, but no, the techno boys at canon have got that one covered. the printer simply reset them back to empty. if you google printer chips for canon 610 all of a sudden the bad reviews appear. in fact no good reviews appear.
in conclusion, if you are happy to shell out loads of dosh on OEM or Canon cartridges, then this is as good a printer as any in its price range, (probably better). i do have issues about all the plastic that i throw away and i am angry that Canon employ techno staff to force me to do that instead of encouraging recyling and refilling. Rant rant rant

I have just purchased one of these units for my son who is overjoyed with its performance, he say's "this is the best bit of kit I have ever had, it does everything it say's on the 'tin' and more." This really is the best thing since sliced bread and deserves a rating of 11 out 10
Packaging review only - no USB supplied November 3, 2008 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
A quick review to let you know the USB cable isn't supplied - very annoying! According to Amazon this is the norm, but it wasn't stated in the description at the time I bought it.
Nightmare October 31, 2008 2 out of 8 found this review helpful
Bought printer on the Wed received next day, Great service from Amazon. Now for the Printer. Unpacked and setup which took me nearly 1 hour. It takes 13 mins just to allign the print heads. Done test sheet worked great. Now to print some letters and photo's. This is where the nightmare began. Printed a 1 page letter which the printer decided to spread over several pages also when I printed 1 photo it was also spread over several pages. I uninstalled the canon software and started again and tried the printer on my laptop (same problem). I phoned canon and they said to only use their dedicated software that it came with to print photo's but still same problem. After spending nearly i hour to canons useless helpline costing premium rate I was told the printer is faulty and as its under 2 weeks old to return it to Amazon for a exchange or a refund. WARNING When I phoned canon they already had all my details name. address phones number. email and what type of computer I had and I didn't tell them. Canon told me when I installed the printer it automatically sends all your details over the internet. Never again will I buy canon. I have now bought an HP PHOTOSMART C6280 and its fantastic.
