The butterfly house arrived promptly and although I did have initial problems paying for the caterpillars online it was sorted out very quickly when I rang the company. The house is very pretty and very durable. Now my butterflies have flown off I shall wash the house and use it again next year.

I bought this for my 6 year old son and believe me, it was money very well spent. The whole family has been fascinated to watch the tiny caterpillars grow into enormous fluffy ones. We actually watched them turn into chrysalides which was the most amazing thing I have ever seen! We now have 5 beautiful butterflies which we will be releasing into the garden in a couple of days time. I would totally recommend this to anyone.

I bought the butterflies to tie in with my Y5 lifecycles topic- I think I was more interested than some of the children! The caterpillars are tiny when they arrive (only a few extra pounds for delivery- but make sure you are in 'cos Royal Mail locked mine away!)- and rapidly grow to be enormous!
The caterpillars are happy munching the (foul smelling- DON'T open the lid!) stuff at the bottom, and it is interesting to see how they behave- they enjoyed swinging from the top of the jar or generally eating upside-down.
The children loved them and would be eager to check on them each morning, and were not at all phased by the cobwebby trails left by the caterpillars, nor seemed to notice the skin shedding.
When my caterpillars eventually changed into chrisalides, I must admit most of them fell off, either through caterpillar ineptitude or general handling. Easy enough to transfer them although I would suggest doing this yourself.
Despite this, every one of my butterflies emerged fine, although one had part of his wing missing, but still flew away quite happily (this may have had something to do with the falling, or perhaps impatient prodding from my y5s).
I had a whole crowd of 2 y5 classes watching for the release- it was a lovely moment, although the butterflies do need a bit of time to go. I would recommend ding this in as bright sunshine as possible or they will just stay put, wings closed.
Overall, a lovely experience, not at all hard work, and very rewarding. The children loved it too!
ps once chrysalides, mine took about 7 days to emerge, of course over the weekend so we all missed it! but that was a long and nervous wait!

I bought this item so that my class of 6/7 year olds could see first hand the life cycle of a butterfly. I rate this 100% effective, the children were so excited when each stage was reached. We releassed the butterfliles and I am glad to say that all 5 reached maturity. We released them in our school field, watched by the reception and year 1 classes. My next class said they can't wait until it is their turn. I will be buying catterpillars every year now!
