4-Port USB Hub with extras June 14, 2010 Mr. J. Mortimer (Yorkshire, England) While on the outside it looks cheap and plasticy like a lot of Star Wars merchandise, it does have a few surprises.
The unit can be stood upright or slanted in 'moving' mode, as R2-D2 does in the films and the stock product photo on Amazon, although there aren't actually any moving parts in this USB hub and it doesn't move around (unless you push it!)
I have found that the rear two USB ports can only be used when it is in the standing position, as the batteries (what ever they are supposed to be) on the feet get in the way of any USB plugs (even small ones) when R2 is in the 'moving' position.
The sounds are clear and crisp, not surprising really as they're only beeps and warbles after all, but it's still good that they're not raspy. There is a little switch underneath the unit that effectively disconnects the speaker, the sounds still play if you push the demo button or plug something in but with the switch in the off position they can't be heard.
Shame there are no lights, perhaps a little home modification with a couple of low-power LEDs run from the USB power... the unit is just screwed together so shouldn't be too hard to get into. Don't try this at home unless you know what you're doing though.
Overall a great little desk ornament that doubles as a useful 4-port USB hub. I am tempted to also get the Dr Who TARDIS 4-port hub for someone's Christmas present, the R2 unit is mine though!
Its not a toy May 13, 2010 D. K. Pearce (UK) This hub is exactly that a 4 port hub. Its a novelty that squeeks like R2D2 when a device is plugged in but that novelty does wear thin and it becomes an object of function again which it does do well.
Star Wars R2D2 Usb Hub February 2, 2010 Mr. G. Lumley Arrived safely and on time.
Works well and looks good.
Just a little disappointed that it did not do more (like lights flashing, head turning, or any sort of movement).
You have been warned January 16, 2010 Chris (London, UK) The entertainment value of this usb hub can never be overrated. Anyone who buys an R2D2 gadget is a fan and why would anyone else buy such a thing, isn't it?
The bleep is a bit long on connecting but if you use the hub as a stationary one you won't hear it often.
There are 4 ports on it and I never managed to get more than 2 functional. I always have the mouse plugged in but I am unable to get 2 2,5" external drives working on the hub in addition. One yes. So while for functionality I would only give 2-3 stars, for what's the point of 4 hubs if you can't use them, the novelty value of this little gadget is worth the extra 1 or 2.
Christmas Hit January 11, 2010 Nicola (London) This was a tree present for my husband, who loved it. All the men at Christmas seemed to really appreciate it. The USB hub has already come in useful, although more of a home rather than office gadget, as the R2D2 noises go on for about 30 seconds every time you plug something in.
