Excellent, reasonably priced video recorder November 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this as a gift, and as I already have a more expensive hard drive based video recorder, wasn't sure if I would actually use it.
But to be honest, it's perfect for the times I wouldn't really bother carrying a chunkier video camera around.
I was very impressed with the size and weight, it's a nice, easily carryable format, simple interface. The USB port is included and pops out with a button press, which I also appreciate - hate having to keep different USB cables for the various gadgets I have.
Image quality is very good - one comment is that it can be a tiny bit grainy in dark conditions, but with ample light, the picture quality is excellent.
I tried it on a Mac and a PC. You don't need to install the software on either if you don't want to, the disk will appear on both operating systems and you can get the files from there. The software is PC only, and does the job OK.
In summary - a very nice package. I would thoroughly recommend if you want a good standard video camera that you can just grab and stick in your pocket, and use very easily.
UNBEATABLE AS A SIMPLE, QUICK TO USE BASIC HD VIDEO CAMCORDER November 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Kodak Z16 is specifically aimed at those moments in life where you want to grab some video footage, quickly with minimum fuss. Whether it be at a concert, sport, family moments it delivers high quality images that are easy to view on your HD or standard TV that can also be easily managed on your PC/Laptop for either uploading or editing to CD. It also comes with everything you need to get started immediately. Note: only 128MB internal so you will need a Data card for longer video footage.
What I particularly like about the Zi6 is it's simplicity. For it's price it's never going to be a serious camcorder, but it delivers superb picture quality particularly in HD mode. Regrettably the sound is only recorded in mono, where as stereo would really have made the difference. The Zi6 is small and compact, deeper than a blackberry but looks and feels like a large mobile phone. It's light, easy to carry with a strap and comes with a basic pouch. It does have a cheap (ish) feel about it when using the buttons and controls and the on/off slide switch in particular needs to be used with care as it is not a good design and could break if you are not too careful.
The control of the main features (record, zoom, playback, next video, pause etc) are controlled through the main by a thumb operated mini joystick in the centre of the camcorder and is very easy to use.
The screen display for watching video is good and very clear and once you connect to your TV the video quality is excellent. You can connect using phono cables (included)to either a HDTV or a standard TV.
The phone comes complete with some basic but adequate Kodak editing software that allows you to edit etc and also burn to DVD/CD as required.
Connection to your PC is via USB, and the Zi6 does not have a seperate lead, instead it has a fixed USB connector which flicks out of the side of the camcorder at the flick of a button so the whole thing connects to your PC. Now, very handy if you have a laptop, but quite inconvenient if you have to use USB's at the back of your PC as you have to disconnect some other ports in use to fit the Zi6 in.
For youtube it has some pre built software that enables rapid uploading, and you can choose a smaller file mode for easier and quicker sharing with good quality.
The Zi6 camera modes are:
- still pictures @ 3MPixels - HD 720p @ 60FPS (slo mo playback) or @ 30FPS - VGA web ready
There is a Close up/Normal switch, and you can zoom in and out (x 2)further by using the small joystick on the control screen.
The Zi6 comes with 2 AA rechargeable batteries and a simple plug in charger. It also has a tripod mount with a standard 1/4-in socket.
So, to sum up if all you are after is a simple to use but good image quality digital camcorder with HD capability, then the Zi6 is a good choice.
I love using it, it's great fun!

Love it, Love it, Love it
Was delivered last week and i can't put it down, i have taken it to work, to football and just messed around with the kids, It fits in your pocket so its always to hand to capture those funny moments.
I didn't know if i would use it as i used to use my phone, but this gives you much more, Firstly i was amazed at the HD qaulity for something that didn't cost much money was superb.I just popped the cables in the TV and had a really good laugh at all my footage.
Well done Kodak, great product.
A FATAL FLAW October 28, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
How looking forward to this was I? And how utterly let down am I?
Putting it simply this cam has a major flaw - the on/off slider switch is so flimsy mine broke the second time it was turned on. It's a cheap, nasty switch and will not take much usage before it leaves you cursing Kodak as well. I managed to film my daughter for 30 seconds on a trial run, then noticed the switch seemed disconnected from the unit. I turned the device off to take a closer look and the switch just came off. I'm returning my item and getting a refund.
BE WARNED!
My review October 18, 2008 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
OK, I've just bought one and now had it for about 24 hours. The description on the side of the box reads...
* Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Camera * Wrist strap and pouch * User guide * Arcsoft media impression software (PC only) * 2 AA rechargeable batteries NiMH (2000mAh, btw) * Battery Charger (fits 2 batteries only) * HD and AV cables (about 1 metre each)
Just to note. It does not come with an extra memory card which is essential to purchase on top of the unit. I bought an 8GB fast reading memory card of good quality which I think is crucial for huge HD files. The camera is apparently able to take 32GB memory cards. The VGA (lowest setting) resolution is fantastic for video sharing sites such as Youtube with no problems uploading the file direct from the pop-out USB plug built into the camera, via a PC. No software needs to be installed on your PC or MAC to do this task. The HD (highest setting) footage is awesome, especially plugged into an HD TV. You get a basic software application on CD-ROM (PC's only) that lets you edit your footage which you are unable to do directly on the camera. The box description reads....
* Windows OS XP SP2 or Vista - Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor or higher - Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher * Macintosh OS X 10.4 or higher * 1GB RAM * 300MB available hard disk space * 1024 x 768 display resolution * USB port 1.1 or higher * CD-ROM drive
The camera will suffer severely in dark/dim locations but makes up with being vibrant and crystal clear in daylight. You will need an extremely steady hand or a tripod too. I found you need to pan areas very, very slowly to reduce camera shake/blur and any noise your hands make on the unit will be picked up on the mic too (really annoying to hear back). It does not have image stabilisation and when you view back your footage on a huge 42" HD TV, you will soon realise and learn just how steady you need to hold the camera while recording. The macro facility is amazing and can't wait to experiment with it.
Another factor that seems to be coming to light is how power hungry the unit is. Some may opt for expensive lithium batteries or invest in another battery charger that can charge 4 x AA at a time in under an hour. The batteries that come with the unit take 15 hours to charge and soon drain. I intend taking my camera on holiday so I will need to buy one of those Super-Power battery charge units complete with numerous 2450mAh batteries to power this camera adding yet another extra cost as well as the memory card, so bear in mind all the added extras you may possibly need.
You will not be disappointed with this camera, just be weary of how the slightest camera shake while recording can be multiplied severely when viewing on a huge 42" + HD TV can look. I think it's going to be one of the best gadgets I've bought and perfectly ideal for Youtube addicts which I think Kodak has now cornered the market with.
Hope the above helps someone thinking about buying one, I'm glad I did.
