Good camera September 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a really good camera, depending what you want. It is more of a jack of all trades in that an SLR has better image quality and a traditional compact is easier to carry around. But that was the reason I bought it. I need something a can carry that takes up little room - to get that I'd need multiple lenses etc. It really isn't fair to compare with a DSLR - if you want one buy one - but if you want to try something more advanced than a point and shoot have a look at this.
If you have a problem reading the SD card in Windows XP August 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you have a problem reading the SD card in Windows XP the chances are you have a High Capacity memory card. Unless you keep your copy of XP up to date, you need Microsoft hotfix 923293 (google it) to read high capacity cards. High capacity is defined as starting at 1Gb, but standard HD ends at 4Gb, so there is an overlap. Look at your card; if it says SDHC and you can't read it in the PC, try the hotfix.
Made in China August 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Bought this as my old S3IS was stolen and must admit there are better cameras for the money on the market. There is no substantial innovation compared to the discontinued model: - The camera is graining in the same manner as the S3IS when set to ISO above 200 - For a common user the higher mpx is literally for nothing and so is the slot for the optional flash - The AF is not even a bit faster - Some parts of the plastic the body is made of have a cheap look and remind me of the old East-German cameras - The item is a Chinese make (the previous one was a MADE IN JAPAN model) The only pro`s are: - face recognition feature - lens cover has a lock, so it does not fall off easily, which was the illness of the S3IS - Canon made the LCD display slightly bigger
About as good as it gets June 27, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have owned the Canon S5 IS for six months and have grown to appreciate its very comprehensive functions, its ease of use, and its astounding capabilities for close-up and telephoto work. Many times, I have been with people using a full SLR camera and they have been very surprised at the fantastic macro shots this camera can take of tiny insects or the insides of flowers. You can literally get up so close that the lens is virtually touching the object you are photographing and it will still be in focus. On the other hand, the 12 times optical zoom enables you to take very clear photographs from a great distance away from the subject - its like looking through a good pair of binoculars.
The camera can be used on automatic all the time and the results will be fine. However, as you beging to explore the camera you will find many advanced functions. For example, I use exposure bracketing, which takes three images at different exposures which can then be combind on the computer to make a high dymamic range photograph. There is a colour picker function which lets you take, say, a photograph of a woman with a red dress on in which everything except the dress will be in black and white. The panorama function works easily and the Photostitch software provided with the camera will assemble the images into a perfect panaorama.
However, for myself, two other functions stand out - firstly the magnificent flip-out LCD which lets you take photographs from low down without bending, or high over a crowd of people by holding the camera over your head. Or for a self-portrait, just flip and twist the LCD and point the camera at yourself and you will see your image in the LCD.
Secondly, don't neglect the excellent video capabilities of this camera. I have a 4gb memory card and this will record 30 minutes of top-quality video with very fine sound from the stereo microphones located either side of the lens.
I highly recommend this camera - there is much more I could say about it and its countless advanced functions. I have friends with SLRs who struggle to get the best from them, and also have to cart round heavy cameras and lenses. I have complete confidence that I am better off with the S5 IS, where ease of use and portability enables me to take it where SLRs can't go and have it always with me without the need for a heavy bag of accessories.
Amazing camera - buy one now June 1, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have one of these beauties with a 8mb sdhc card which lets me store over 3000 photos at full resolution, along with high quality video. I have taken some pictures which make me look like a professional photographer. Believe me, my skills are less than average!
I bought this as a replacement for a good 5 megapixel camera and this blows it away. The zoom function is excellent and the quality of pictures has to be seen to be believed. Additionally, there are numerous functions and a fantastic 2.5 inch high-res flip-out screen is included.
If you have any hesitation about which camera to buy, then just buy this one, honestly its a no-brainer!
