This is a brand new set which has been launched to commemorate Thomas's 60th Birthday. The main attraction of this set is that Thomas appears to be a real steam engine as steam appears from his funnel as he makes authentic whistling noises. The steam is cold water steam and is 100% safe for children. They can even fill up the boiler by themselves, although adult supervision is recommended! I am not sure how this is produced, but even as an adult it is amazing watching the steam appear as Thomas puffs round the track. I would suggest buying a large bottle of de-ionised water (from any garage or hardware store at about 1) as you and your child will keep wanting to refill Thomas' boiler again and again! A full boiler will last Thomas approximately 25 circuits.The sheer magic of seeing Thomas steaming along as in the shows will enthrall and captivate your children of all ages. This is a must for any Thomas fan, even if you have a lot of the Tomy Motor Road and Rail already, as this is something quite special. Thomas also has a fantastic metallic blue coat and is not the run of the mill one that you get with all the other sets. The set itself contains one inner loop and an outer loop, enabling your child to make full use of the points to switch tracks. There is also a tunnel and a large suspension bridge to add to the interest.--Matt Finn

I bought this as a Christmas present for my just-turned-three year old son who is absolutely obsessed with Thomas. It was our first "real" train set, and I was worried about whether or not he would find it more frustrating than fun.
Well, he hasn't put the train down in over 24 hours! The track snapped together easily, and it stays together perfectly (except for when he sat on the bridge--but even that went right back together!). The train cars lock together easily and do not fall apart. My son can easily operate all of the switches by himself. The train keeps chugging, even if it is slightly off the track or just on the floor without the track. The train has been dropped, banged up, slept on, and generally mishandled in typical toddler fashion, and it still works.
The steam action is great, but even when it runs out of water, the lights and peeps are enough to keep the kids entertained. My daughter has played with the train set just as much as her little brother, and even mommy and daddy marvelled at the steam!
This was our first Tomy Motor Road and Rail set. We are definitely going to expand!

Just bought this for my 3 year old son for his birthday and he has not stopped playing with it.

My 3 year old is having hours of fun with this. It works just as described, with steam-like vapour and lights, and great sound effects.

This set really impressed our 3 young children. The steam effect is just as described and really adds to the enjoyment. Great value, and I have no doubt we will be adding to our little island of Sodor for birthdays etc. Recommended.

It's not often I'm compelled to write a review, especially about a toy, but this one has really impressed me and my wife. (whoops....and of course our children). Maybe it is slightly on the expensive side, but you do get a very innovative high quality toy for your money.
The stream action is better than I thought....espcially when the train pulls into the station and lets out loud whistle and a long burst of steam. The steam is actual cool...which I can't understand...who ever heard of cool steam...but it safe for the kids which is all that matters.
Well done Tomy!!!
