Good idea but let down on practical use October 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My daughter begged and begged me to buy her this. As soon as she got it we had problems. The on/off button kept sticking - ruining finished pictures as she tried to press it to stop at a particular loop on for it to skid across the page or react slowly and carry on drawing a bit further. Also, the pens are cheap and dry up very quickly. Trying to find replacement ones that fit well enough that the tip touches the paper evenly to draw a complete pattern is hard. The dials do not have simple explanations making the result random. Great if you want a random pattern but not great for remembering and repeating specific patterns. The pattern size is also a pain. For those of you who rely on A4 sized paper for kid's artwork, be aware that these patterns randomly spin out often a lot wider than A4 and will need to buy larger/tape together more than one sheet. This can get very expensive if the drawings keep messing up and children wish to draw over and over. Despite these faults, it is still a great "spin" on an old idea of spirographs. I hope Crayola take the time to road test this properly and release a much improved version with better pens, buttons and dials. (Personally, I am considering replacing thisat Christmas with Crayola's new product, a Spinaroo, as it looks more fun and a better design)
Great fun for kiddies and amusement for adults watching on August 26, 2008 This item was great value for money. We bought it for a little girl who loved playing with it as 'Spirograph', also adopting it as a pet bug. She managed to push the pen ends in after about 10 mins, but you can get replacements fairly reasonably. The patterns were great, it was amusing to see it spin around...and watch the child try to stop it once spinning. Remember to get batteries before presenting the gift!
Fun, but could be better October 19, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My daughter really enjoys Doodle Doug, but the pens simply aren't good enough - they do not last, which means sourcing them from the manufacturer as no others appear to fit properly. Sourcing them takes about 2-3 weeks so toy has sat in cupboard unused for that time.
Good, but could be so much better with just a little thought.
fun at first - but ... September 19, 2007 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I bought this for my 5 year old having seen good reviews and as he had seen the tv ad and had some birthday money left. It was great fun at first - although Doug is a little difficult for young ones to turn on and off (it takes a couple of seconds to respond). There are about 12 dots on a clock style winder as settings on his base for different "spirograph" style patterns but no leaflet with examples of each design - so my son quickly forgot which setting gave which pattern and found his favourites hard to find again. Doug does not stop drawing until you turn him off - he is a very heavy user of the 5 mini felt tips he comes with and after 4 sheets of paper some were dried up - I then found that ordinary felt tips do not fit in his slots and even crayola felt tips which I went out to buy later that morning also did not fit!!!! His batteries also ran low incredibly quickly. Very expensive then for abot 10 minutes fun - although my 4 children , including the older ones were entranced for that time. My son hasnt asked to use it again - but it would be fun at a party, to play with friends or at playgroup to let lots of kids have some fun and a laugh etc - provided you had managed to source replacement pens (which given his cost I am intending to do ). I also must have misread the instructions and thought Doug took "any pens"- be warned he doesnt. The previous reviewers must have had better luck with the longevity of the tips provided in their boxes.
Looks great, but stick with original spyrograph!! September 6, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
My daughter received this for her birthday today. Looks great fun and probably would be if it hadn't been so damn tempermental. First it works then it doesn't. We thought it was the batteries so bought a load more, but still it plays up. Then it works for a bit and won't turn. It will work briefly but although the idea is sound, the switch is too clumsy, it needs to have a regular on/off switch, not just press the back of it's already wobbly shell. Guess we must have got a duff one!!! Had to resort to the traditional old spyrograph again!
