Fun for a while January 17, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is fun when you first discover it and is more educational than a number of toys that claim to be. However it is tiresome quite quickly.
Small, cute, and fun for all ages January 17, 2008 When I received this I was pleasantly surprised at how cute looking it is - it fits in the palm of your hand and is made from hardwearing, translucent plastic (mine was purple).
It's very easy to use (it comes with an instruction booklet, even though it's pretty self-explanatory). It follows the same format as real life 20qs - you think of an item, tell the game whether it is animal, vegetable or mineral, and then the game asks you questions. You reply to the questions by pressing 'Yes', 'No', 'Unknown' or 'Sometimes'. There's also an undo button in case you enter the wrong one.
It's pretty clever, though not flawless, but then if it was right every single time there'd be no point trying to defeat it! It correctly guessed 'guinea pig' on my first game, then guessed 'personal computer' when I was thinking of laptop, and 'christmas ornament' when I was thinking of a bauble, so it's generally correct or very nearly correct. However, when I thought of an electric fire, it guessed 'bathtub' then 'ironing board' and then gave up! So it is possible to win.
I'd say this is a great toy and a total bargain. It'll entertain any ages, although if you have very young kids I'd recommend the junior version. It's great fun for car journeys and also good if you want to play a game with your kids but don't have time for a fully fledged board game, or if you're bored and don't have anyone else around to play games with.
Is it educational? Well, it makes kids think about the material properties of the things they encounter in the world around them, although it probably doesn't teach them much, but at least it's stimulating.
The only flaw is that the game's 'amusing' phrases such as 'I can't make it look too easy' and 'Oh, I see you've picked an easy one' which scroll across the screen in between questions can get annoying after a while!
Plays with your mind January 17, 2008 Despite beating the 20Q v2 on my first attempt, after that I was amazed at how often this little plastic ball beeped at me and my family and won!
My kids loved it and I found myself playing with it for an hour every now and then over Christmas.
It's a better social toy than I thought - get some friends round and see them get freaked by this little gizmo getting into their minds.
My only complaint really is that the screen is a little small for older players, but that aside most who used it enjoyed the experience of having their mind read by the 20Q v2.
It isn't something that you will keep going back to, it's more of a party toy or seasonal toy, and considering that I think the price is about right.
Overall a great toy, good fun for the whole family young and old, kids will love seeing granddad trying to outsmart a little plastic ball.
Deceptively addictive! January 16, 2008 This is a computerised version of 20 questions, the toy using what must be an elaborate set of algorythms to whittle an infinite number of options down to just one.
I gave this game to two kids, 9 and 11, after trying it a few times myself. When I played it my first choice was 'laptop', thinking it would never get it. It did. Later I chose 'cat' and it didn't get it, oddly trying to be too specific with 'tabby cat'... The kids' first reaction was one of indifference, claiming it was a bit boring. But they still played it... The whole family played it, in fact, with reports of long evenings spent trying to outwit it. At one point it also made a trip to the local police station, the chaps there apparently not believing the tales of the game's prescience! Maybe it was used to solve a few crimes, I don't know ;-)
It's one of those toys that will be played endlessly at first and then maybe get forgotten about, only to be pulled out of a cupboard every now and then. In that sense, it's much like many other games. In terms of educational value, well I think it has real potential for developing kids' logical deduction.
Shortcomings - the display isn't the easiest to read at times and the buttons are quite small and, as I mentioned above, it is sometimes infuriatingly precise in its choices (why 'tabby cat' instead of just 'cat') and its questions (when I tried 'cushion' it kept looping round questions because it couldn't seem to cope with the idea that they are both square and round, sometimes). But those occasional lapses aside, it's great.
Biggest frustration? It cheats! It's supposed to get it in 20 questions or you win. Well on a few occasions it seemed to conveniently 'forget' this and carry on past the 20 limit...
I'd recommend this as a diversion or a bit of fun, or to help kids with their reasoning skills. Sadly it's too loud to be a game the kids can play on journeys - drivers would be distracted and if I was stuck on a train next to someone playing this I'd chuck it through the window!
Short lived fun. January 16, 2008 The little ball attempts to "guess" the object you are thinking of being an update of the "animal, vegetable, mineral" parlour game. It is fun, although it occasionally takes more than its alloted twenty questions. It is amazing how often its either very close of correct. The problem is that it wears pretty thin after a while. My seven year old loves it and would probably recommend it to his peers with 5 stars.
It is pretty durable, good fun and does what it says. It is also pretty compasct so it can be jammed into a pocket for travel. However its appeal is limited.
